Dr Simon Hammans trained in Neurology at the Royal Free, Kings and the National Hospital. His research was in the genetics of mitochondrial myopathies with the late Professor Anita Harding, for which he was awarded the Noble prize.

In 1994 he was appointed Consultant in Chichester and Southampton. He continues to do a general neurology clinic in Chichester as well as a weekly specialist clinic in muscle disease and neurogenetic disorders. He has developed the Wessex regional muscle and nerve service with his Southampton colleagues.

He has a monthly clinic for patients with complex genetic disorders with Dr Nicky Foulds and Professor Diana Eccles. A clinical negligence expert witness practice has sharpened his awareness of the difficulties of neurological practice.  He is a council member of the British Myology society.

His wife Diana is a GP and two of their four children are junior doctors.
