This important document examines the state of the neurology workforce in the UK. It finds that there are incomplete data available on workforce provision. The data that are available highlight a disparity in the care provided for neurology patients from region to region. 

As a result, the document recommends that, as a starting point, all regions level up to an absolute minimum of 1.6 neurologists per 100,000. The ABN is calling for the support of the healthcare sector & government for a comprehensive census of the multidisciplinary neurology workforce across the UK within the next 2 years. This would provide, for the first time, a clear picture of the neurology workforce to enable evidence-based planning for services affecting 11 million people and drive further improvements in patient care. 

We look forward to working with members to help deliver the report’s recommendations and to ensure that it reaches the widest possible audiences. This is not just about numbers on a page – it's about patients with epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and headache disorders who face wildly different access to specialist care depending on where they live. Without accurate data regional services cannot plan effectively, and patients will continue to fall through the gaps.

The ABN Australasian Fellowships are 12-month clinical placements in Australia commencing late January/early February and expected to complement the clinical training in the UK. Applications are open to Neurology trainees who hold a UK Training post.

This updated guidance provides a consensus- based approach to using DMTs. We provide recommendations for eligibility, starting, monitoring, switching and stopping of DMTs; pregnancy; equitable access to DMT; autologous haemopoietic stem- cell transplantation; and use of generics. We highlight best practice where it exists and discuss future priorities.
