New MHRA National Patient Safety Alert for Valproate November 2023

On 28.11.23, the MHRA have published a UK National Patient Safety Alert concerning valproate use in men and women. Whilst there is no immediate need for clinical action, it is important that you familiarise yourself with this new information; to help with this, we have published a guideline, explaining the new recommendations. They will be implemented in two phases; the first phase (concerning all new prescribing of valproate to men and women under 55, and all current prescribing of valproate to women under 55) will go live on 31.1.24.  Phase 2 (concerning all men under 55 currently prescribed valproate) will be implemented probably later in 2024, at present there is no fixed date.
